DPIS created March 2, 2009 and is a subdivision of St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPIIRAS).

DPIS created from the staff employed in the scientific branch SCPS «SPECTR» Federal State Unitary Enterprise Research Institute «Vector» from 1994 to 2009 year.

The major direction of research is development new methods and algorithms, creation, integration and maintenance of information security system, providing information protection.

Information security system, developed by DPIS, provides cryptographic protection of information and can be used in protection of personal/private data.

DPIS comprises three research laboratories:

• Research Laboratory of cryptology
• Lab Information Systems Security
• Research Laboratory of Applied Problems of information security
